Locking Wheel Nut Removal | How to Remove Security Locking Wheel Nuts/Bolts'. Simple Stepped Guide

Removing tight security locking wheel nuts/bolts

CAUTION You are recommended to wear protective gloves and goggles when removing tight security nuts! Firstly, tighten all the standard hex bolts on the wheel - this will reduce the pressure on the the actual locking wheel nut. When tightening the standard hexagonal bolts (not the security nut), make sure that you do not damage the thread.

NOTE: Contrary to the instructions for installing the security wheel nuts, an impact wrench is a suitable tool for removing wheel nuts that are too tight. When the first attempt fails to loosen the security wheel nut, try again. The impact wrench must exert adequate torque.

Locking Wheel Nut Removal Guide

Take the locking wheel nut and using a suitable loosening tool, e.g. an impact wrench, spider spanner, or ratchet. When loosening, you must always use the loosening tool to exert pressure on the security wheel nut and locking wheel nut's longitudinal axis. This ensures that the locking wheel nut engages exactly into the coding and does not slip or twist out.

If you have lost or broken your locking wheel nut. We can supply 'Locking Wheel Nuts' for the majority of all vehicle manufacturers | Buy your Locking Wheel Nut Now Online | We Do not Require the Wheel Nut Security Key Code! Simply follow our '3 Step process'.

Make sure that the loosening tool you use is not applied obliquely (at an angle). Oblique applications can cause the locking wheel nut key or coding’s to deform or fracture.

How to remove fast security nuts and bolts

When the loosening procedure described above fails, please loosen (on four hole rims) the standard hexagonal bolt opposite the security wheel nut. On five hole rims, loosen the two standard hexagonal bolts opposite the security wheel nut. After loosening, repeat the procedure described above.

After loosening the security wheel nut, remove all other standard wheel nuts/bolts.

Further Tips/Advice on Wheel Nut Removal Techniques

In cases where the security wheel nuts are too tight. In order to reduce stress and flatten dings and dents of the security wheel nut head, please take a drift punch or bar and hammer on the locking wheel nut in axial direction.

With this action you will can get a better and deeper engagement of the locking wheel nut.

When undoing the security wheel nuts, please fix the wheel nut wrench in axial direction/towards the security wheel nut by hand in order to avoid or minimize any tipping / side load.

Installing Security Wheel Nuts

Standard Hexagonal Bolt

1. Remove one standard hexagonal nut or bolt from each each wheel

*When replacing the wheel later, remove the Security Wheel Nut first and install it last.

IMPORTANT – Before installing the security wheel nut, please always check that the wheel lock nut has the same thread, seat, and shaft/overall length as the original standard nut/bolt!

Impact wrench

2. Install each security wheel nut/lock by hand on each wheel. Do Not Use an Impact Wrench when tightening the wheel nuts. Make sure that the locking nut pattern is firmly and securely engaged into the security wheel nut lock pattern.

Using the locking wheel nut torque wrench, tighten each locking wheel nut with the torque specified in your vehicle's manual.

use a torque wrench

Apply axial pressure on the torque wrench in the direction of the security wheel nut to prevent the locking wheel nut from slipping or jamming. Turn the wheel by hand to check whether it rotates freely and without impediment. Verify that the minimum thread engagement into the hub assembly is 5,5 revolutions of the fasteners. Certain locking wheel nuts/bolts are a 2-piece design. If the locking wheel nut has a floating seat washer/rotating collar ensure that this is attached to the lock wheel nut/bolt before installing.

We do not recommend the use of oil, grease or lubricants on threads.

3. Turn the wheel by hand to check whether it rotates freely and without impediment.

IMPORTANT When fitting the security nuts do not use an impact wrench:

As this can damage the security nut and or the locking wheel nut and your vehicle. After the first thirty miles, please check again that the security wheel nut sits properly, and if necessary re-tighten it with a torque wrench. So that you can access your locking wheel nut in the event of a wheel/Tyre change, we recommend that you keep your locking wheel nut in the glove-box of your vehicle.
